Engraved ostrich eggshells

ANTHROPOLOGY More than 300 engraved ostrich-eggshell fragments recently discovered in South Africa are, at 60,000 years old, the earliest reliable evidence of humans communicating using symbols. The eggshells were probably used as water containers, the researchers say, and the markings may once have identified the owners.
