Golden Phallus

An amateur archaeologist armed with a metal detector in Norfolk, England, has found a small, solid-gold phallus. The artifact, measuring only 2 centimeters, is probably part of a necklace belonging to an expatriate Roman soldier. Similar bronze necklaces have been found in several places frequented by Roman soldiers. The jewelry was presumably meant to bring the soldiers good luck and protect them against evil spirits and sorcery.
