This color-enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) shows a breast cancer cell’s overall shape at a very high magnification. Cancer cells are best identified by internal characteristics; but a SEM can show how cells respond in changing environments and can map the distribution of the binding sites of hormones and other biological molecules.
