Mass Spectrometry

Using mass spectrometry, doctors can diagnose disorders by analyzing tissue samples. If the tissue contains a protein with an abnormal mass, this indicates that an irregular amino acid has replaced the usual one in the protein chain—evidence of a genetic defect.
